[06:03:44] <Bodman456> [TOPIC]Promoting Ubuntu to charitable organisations
[06:03:46] <Bodman456> Charity stores such as the Salvo's or Lifeline often have computers for sale with non-free and unlicensed software on them, offering to install a free alternative (Ubuntu/Xubuntu) will assist them in allowing them to legally sell the system, and help promote Ubuntu to a wider audience (darkrose)
[06:03:57] <Bodman456> Ok'
[06:04:08] <nisshh> hehe
[06:04:09] <Bodman456> Who wants to start
[06:04:17] <nisshh> Bodman456, darkrose isnt around atm, she ragequit
[06:04:25] <Bodman456> oh, hmm
[06:04:41] <nisshh> she should be back in a minute probably
[06:04:41] <firtvid20> Well we could go into the charity store ( I know a few in BUrwood) and tell them about opensource software and Ubuntu
[06:04:45] <dns53> Bodman456 it is usually licenced software, there are programs to get volume licences for charities to recycle old computers
[06:05:08] <firtvid20> dns53: BUt they could be outdated software though
[06:05:17] <Bodman456> That's just from the agenda item
[06:05:22] <sagaci> like xp
[06:05:22] * nisshh is just watching, there isnt much i wish to discuss this meeting
[06:05:32] <dns53> i have been involved with computerbank, building linux and windows computers from donated hardware, there are several ogranisations around the place
[06:05:37] <firtvid20> sagaci: True
[06:05:48] <Bodman456> Yeah, I've seen some that were running 3.1
[06:05:54] <Bodman456> when XP was new
[06:06:21] <Bodman456> I think this is a pretty good idea
[06:06:37] <sagaci> preach ubuntu 10.04.1
[06:06:44] <Bodman456> or 10.10
[06:06:53] <Bodman456> which came out yesterday
[06:06:58] <dns53> it is something worth doing if you have an organisation in your area
[06:07:10] <Bodman456> I have some in Burwood
[06:07:37] <Bodman456> Do we want action on this, or do we agree.
[06:07:39] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Examples, St Vincent De Paul, Anglicare
[06:07:45] <Bodman456> Yeah
[06:07:54] <Bodman456> LifeLine toi
[06:07:56] <dns53> the reason they install windows is because they can and they do not have anyone skilled in using linux
[06:08:16] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Well I'd like to help promote Ubuntu to charities, in some cases it is even better than the software already installed
[06:08:27] <Bodman456> Isn't that the aim of distros like Ubuntu and Linux Mint? To be user-friendly?
[06:08:36] <firtvid20> True, true
[06:09:00] <firtvid20> Just pop in the disc, format hard drive, install and sit back and relax
[06:09:11] <firtvid20> (Like I did just now)
[06:09:17] <Bodman456> Linux Mint comes with stuff like Flash preinstalled, i.e, it's a complete system straight off the disk
[06:09:44] <firtvid20> Bodman456: YOu know Maverick disc has 3rd party software pre installed on it?
[06:09:54] <Bodman456> Really?
[06:09:58] <Bodman456> Hmm
[06:10:01] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Like MP3 encoder, flash, java, etc.
[06:10:05] <sagaci> Bodman456: you can hardly call it linux if it works :P
[06:10:16] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Yep, saw that 3 hours ago
[06:10:19] <Bodman456> sagaci: LOL
[06:10:30] <firtvid20> sagaci: SO true!
[06:10:32] <Bodman456> I have Linux Mint, it works fine
[06:10:45] <Bodman456> it worked right out of the box
[06:10:48] <sagaci> Bodman456: they should just call it
[06:10:50] <sagaci> Mint
[06:11:02] <Bodman456> sagaci: LOL
[06:11:10] <firtvid20> Bodman456: BUt we're here to promote Ubuntu. Isn't it?
[06:11:20] <Bodman456> Ohh, I've had an idea!
[06:11:24] <paul_whipp> at least mint is debian too
[06:11:28] <firtvid20> Unless we are allowed to distribute other distros
[06:11:47] <firtvid20> paul_whipp: Yeah, I guess
[06:12:01] <Bodman456> [IDEA] Whip up a Ubuntu or Debian-based distro that comes with a lot of useful software on the disk
[06:12:33] <paul_whipp> Isn't Ubuntu (and Mint) exactly that - a debian distro with lots of useful software?
[06:12:38] <Bodman456> Remember, everyone can use the IDEA command, so feel free
[06:12:52] <Bodman456> Actually, Mint is Ubuntu-based
[06:13:07] <firtvid20> Bodman456: You know we could help them install Ubuntu, remember they don't have to install it themselves
[06:13:18] <paul_whipp> Bodman456: still?
[06:13:31] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: But there is a new version that is straight Debian-based
[06:13:41] <Bodman456> Yeah
[06:13:48] <paul_whipp> ah... my confusion resolved ;)
[06:14:26] <Bodman456> firtvid20: Bit if we pack it with useful software, it means we don't need internet to set it up with useful software.
[06:14:40] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Yeah, true.
[06:15:09] <firtvid20> paul_whipp: For your reference: http://linuxmint.com/
[06:15:33] <dns53> a seperate distro may not be useful but making it easy to install ubuntu + useful software to a lot of machines would be useful
[06:15:45] <paul_whipp> I think Ubuntu comes with too much already. I'd like easier package searching to install the bits I want so its not too complex or updating stuff I don't use from the start.
[06:15:55] <Bodman456> firtvid20: We should work on this together
[06:16:08] <firtvid20> BOdman456: Yeah
[06:16:35] <firtvid20> paul_whipp: Ubuntu Sotware Center can make it easier instead of searching for packages
[06:16:44] <Bodman456> [ACTION]Bodman456 and firtvid20 to work on creating a modified Linux Mint/Ubuntu/Debian distro
[06:17:29] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: Ubuntu Software Centre is your answer
[06:17:35] <paul_whipp> firtvid20: I agree. So less is needed in the initial install. I think Gimp is already gone but Evolution and the like should go to but be very easy to add if wanted.
[06:18:07] <paul_whipp> The less in the initial system the less wasted space, less updates, less problems.
[06:18:13] <firtvid20> Think of this, you work in a charity store, you know nothing about Ubuntu. Suddenly some young person comes up to you and says, oh, would you like us the install Ubuntu on your computer? They would be asking questions after that. Like what is Ubuntu, is it like Windows, etc etc etc.
[06:18:19] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: We need to replace the terminal apps with GUI equivalents too
[06:18:31] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: Yeah
[06:18:45] * firtvid20 gets burned from laptop on his lap
[06:19:11] <Bodman456> firtvid20: Well that actually relates to our next topic.
[06:19:12] <paul_whipp> Bodman456: Yes. I love CLI but it scares people away. Perhaps a chatterbot CLI that accepts natural language :)
[06:19:27] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: CLI?
[06:19:35] <firtvid20> SO we would basically make a Ubuntu distribution designed for charities
[06:19:40] <paul_whipp> Bodman456: command line interface
[06:19:50] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: Ohk thanks
[06:20:08] <Bodman456> firtvid20: How about we call it Charibuntu
[06:20:47] <Bodman456> Do we want to move on to next topic?
[06:20:49] <paul_whipp> I don't think you need/want a special distro. The standard Ubuntu is fine for charities.
[06:21:16] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: We can at least add/remove packages
[06:21:39] <paul_whipp> Bodman456: true but 'if it aint broke...'
[06:21:45] <firtvid20> Bodman456: We could do it for them, remember, they don't need to know how to install things
[06:22:03] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Only to know how to use Ubuntu
[06:22:03] <Bodman456> [VOTE]Move on to next topic
[06:22:21] <paul_whipp> +1
[06:22:29] <Bodman456> +1
[06:22:44] <Bodman456> Anyone else care to vote?
[06:22:59] <firtvid20> +1/
[06:23:11] <firtvid20> Fail
[06:23:14] <Bodman456> LOL
[06:23:26] <Bodman456> ok, we are moving on
[06:23:38] <firtvid20> Everyone seems quiet
[06:23:40] <firtvid20> ..
[06:23:46] <Bodman456> [ENDVOTE]
[06:24:08] <paul_whipp> Is the next topic the user presentations (~= install fests)?
[06:24:24] <Bodman456> [TOPIC]Running user presentations to promote Ubuntu to desktop users - We prepare, advertise and give a 30minute presentation to 12-24 people at a time. They can bring their own machines. For the remaining time ?1.5 hours, we help them test and hopefully install Ubuntu.
[06:24:42] <Bodman456> Hmm, no username on this one
[06:24:45] <paul_whipp> I proposed this one
[06:24:46] <Bodman456> Ok
[06:24:51] <Bodman456> Ok
[06:24:59] <paul_whipp> Sorry I'm new :p
[06:25:07] <firtvid20> LOL
[06:25:10] <Bodman456> Next time, at least put your IRC nick down thanks
[06:25:17] <paul_whipp> Will do
[06:25:19] <Bodman456> :D
[06:25:24] <Bodman456> Ok
[06:25:40] <paul_whipp> I have a few people interested in helping from the email thread.
[06:26:01] <firtvid20> Maybe we could compile a powerpoint presentation and put it up on our website for other people to promote Ubuntu in their local community
[06:26:07] <Bodman456> I would be interested in doing this sort of thing in sydney
[06:26:10] <paul_whipp> A substantial point is - Do people feel it is ok to make money out of this kind of presentation - not much (in case anyone gets excited).
[06:26:35] <paul_whipp> I will prepare a presentation (what's powerpoint? ;))
[06:26:48] <firtvid20> Like a presentation
[06:26:54] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: Maybe like $5 for entry and an installation on Ubuntu on your computer
[06:26:57] <Bodman456> BRB
[06:27:02] <Bodman456> parents going to bed
[06:27:16] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Gosh, tell them you're doing volunteer work
[06:27:20] <paul_whipp> Bodman456: More like $50 to cover the hall etc. and have anything left over.
[06:27:35] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Maybe we only CHARGE them for installing
[06:28:00] <paul_whipp> No - for attending. Funnily enough I think people will be more likely to attend and install if they pay a little for it.
[06:28:28] <paul_whipp> The advert will be tricky - anyone in marketing?
[06:28:37] <firtvid20> paul_whipp: I guess
[06:29:36] <dns53> there is nothing in the licence that says you cannot charge for ubuntu
[06:29:56] <firtvid20> paul_whipp: I do photography
[06:29:59] <paul_whipp> We would not be charging for Ubuntu at all - just for our time and assistance.
[06:30:25] <firtvid20> paul_whipp: And extra money can go to ubuntu.org.au
[06:30:32] <paul_whipp> firtvid20: some nice business type images and the like would be handy.
[06:31:02] <paul_whipp> Actually I was thinking of splitting any money made between the Ubuntu geeks present to help with the installation. I see no harm in that.
[06:31:26] <firtvid20> paul_whipp: I guess so
[06:31:32] <firtvid20> BOdman456: Are you still there>
[06:31:54] <dns53> where do you live paul_whipp, is there already a lug or other group that you could get some volunteers?
[06:31:59] * firtvid20 wonders why Ubuntu is not loading the internet very fast
[06:32:13] <paul_whipp> I am just North of Brisbane
[06:32:22] <firtvid20> Oh dear
[06:32:26] <paul_whipp> I got a few local people reply from the email thread.
[06:32:34] <firtvid20> Bodman456 probably closed his laptop lid
[06:32:39] <paul_whipp> firtvid20: photos can be uploaded easily ;)
[06:33:05] <paul_whipp> And once the presentation and format is done, it could be repeated in other areas.
[06:33:26] <firtvid20> Yeah
[06:34:14] <paul_whipp> It will need a good presenter (for credibility and impact).
[06:34:32] * firtvid20 thinks Bodman456 must have been caught by his mum using a laptop in his bed when he wasn't supposed to
[06:34:38] <paul_whipp> lol
[06:35:13] <paul_whipp> ***paul_whipp feels old
[06:35:31] <firtvid20> paul_whipp: LOL
[06:35:42] <firtvid20> Who's going to chair now?
[06:36:01] * dns53 is one year older today, i feel old
[06:36:02] <paul_whipp> That was the last topic - there were only two
[06:36:24] <paul_whipp> How do you make the ***bit come up in bold?
[06:36:48] <firtvid20> What about distributing cds to the Ubuntu community?
[06:37:32] <paul_whipp> firtvid20: Not on the list I am looking at.
[06:37:34] <firtvid20> I know me and Bodman456 can burn some cds and give them to people who need Ubuntu but can't download it on their internet connection
[06:37:59] <Bodman456> Ok back
[06:38:00] <paul_whipp> Its on computer mag dvds every now and again.
[06:38:17] <Bodman456> did the meeting auto-end?
[06:38:24] <Bodman456> hang on
[06:38:32] <Bodman456> [VOTE]Test
[06:38:40] <firtvid20> Bodman456: No, it didn't
[06:38:40] <Bodman456> +0
[06:38:45] <Bodman456> ok
[06:38:54] <Bodman456> [ENDVOTE]
[06:39:00] <firtvid20> Uh, what?
[06:39:05] <Bodman456> Nvm
[06:39:10] <Bodman456> just checking
[06:39:18] <paul_whipp> How do I 'message the channel'
[06:39:45] <firtvid20> You mean NickServ?
[06:40:03] * dns53 like this ? /me msg
[06:40:10] <firtvid20> To messgae someone, you would go "/msg [person's name here]"
[06:40:16] <paul_whipp> ah message Mootbot
[06:40:28] <Bodman456> E.g. /msg MootBot +1 #ubuntu-au
[06:40:40] <Bodman456> Thats how to private vote
[06:41:06] <firtvid20> I did that
[06:41:08] <Bodman456> What are we discussing again?
[06:41:11] <firtvid20> Anyway
[06:41:13] <paul_whipp> Bodman456: got it thanks
[06:41:24] <firtvid20> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/Meetings
[06:41:28] <paul_whipp> Just curious.
[06:41:28] <dns53> are there any more topics?
[06:41:34] <Bodman456> Nope
[06:41:49] <Bodman456> Anyone have anything else to add?
[06:42:06] <firtvid20> What about distributing Ubuntu cds to Ubuntu users who are in need of them
[06:42:09] <paul_whipp> If anyone wants to get involved in the presentation work, just email the group and I'll pick them up. I am creating a basecamp project for the work.
[06:42:31] <firtvid20> And they might not have a good internet connection or capped
[06:42:35] <paul_whipp> firtvid20: Where do these users make themselves known as being in need?
[06:42:36] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: Can you add me to that list?
[06:42:53] <paul_whipp> Bodman456: sure. IM your email.
[06:43:19] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: boden.matthews@gmail.com
[06:44:06] <paul_whipp> Bodman456: Got it. I hope to create the project tomorrow so you will get an invite on email then.
[06:44:09] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: Here is where they can make themselves known: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/cd-and-dvd
[06:44:15] <Bodman456> paul_whipp Ok
[06:44:44] <firtvid20> Okay, is this it?
[06:44:58] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: Wait sorry it's https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
[06:44:59] <paul_whipp> I can't help feeling that someone who makes themselves know there has probably already found out how to get a CD.
[06:45:30] <firtvid20> I know jellybean is the organiser of the cds and dvd of Ubuntu
[06:45:30] <Bodman456> paul_whipp: Yeah
[06:46:10] <Bodman456> anyone got anything else?
[06:46:34] * Bodman456 picks up gavel
[06:46:37] <firtvid20> Bodman456: Are we still going to set up a stall at the ashfield carnival?
[06:46:56] <Bodman456> Firtvid20: maybe
[06:47:07] <dns53> unfortunately we are not an official loco, if we become official you can bulk order cd's for free
[06:47:24] <firtvid20> Bodman456: I guess that's it
[06:47:33] <paul_whipp> Nice meeting you all
[06:47:46] <firtvid20> Same here ^^
[06:48:17] <Bodman456> [VOTE]End meeting?
[06:48:24] <firtvid20> [END MEETING]

[06:49:08] <firtvid20> lol
[06:49:13] <Blank__> paul_whipp, that's ok... i've gotten quite a few in my time :P
[06:49:20] <Bodman456> dns53: Is there anything you wanted to discuss?
[06:49:25] <dns53> not really
[06:49:38] <dns53> but you might as well go against the flow :)
[06:49:49] <Bodman456> dns53: Why the no vote then?
[06:50:10] <dns53> why not
[06:50:16] <firtvid20> lolz
[06:50:21] <Bodman456> Eh, good point
[06:50:24] <Bodman456> Ok
[06:50:30] <Bodman456> [ENDVOTE]
[06:50:40] <Bodman456> #endmeeting
Meeting ended.
